FORT WAYNE - The IPFW Mastodons faced No. 14 Purdue at Parkview Field on Tuesday night. Shane Trevino recorded his second home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Boilermakers came up with an 11-4 victory moving their overall record to 36-9. The Mastodons now head into the weekend with an overall mark of 15-34.
Purdue used a number of players to pick up the win on Tuesday night. Four different players took the mound for the black and gold while 16 different student-athletes took at least one at-bat. Purdue scored two in the second, and three in the third to take a 5-2 lead early.
Trevino put IPFW on the scoreboard with a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the second inning. The 'Dons pushed another run across home plate in the third as Carter DeBoe earned an RBI with a single to right field. Caleb Fenimore scored on the hit.
Purdue tacked on three more runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth. They scored 11 runs off 12 hits. IPFW added a single run in the sixth and another in the eighth. A Kristian Gayday double to left center field allowed Daren Boss to score in the sixth, while it was a Steve Danielak pitch hit that moved Trevino into scoring position in the eighth. Trevino would go on to score off a Purdue wild pitch.
IPFW had four different players take the mound on Tuesday night. Kevin Kimball got the start and therefore was tagged with the loss. He is now 0-3 on the year after pitching just the first 1.2 innings against Purdue.
Drew Overman and Danny Tursell pitched the middle inning for IPFW. Tursell got the most work of any pitcher with three full innings. He only allowed three hits which resulted in one earned run. Nate White was the final Mastodon to get playing time. He threw the final two innings and recorded two strikeouts.
IPFW will return to action this weekend as they host Oral Roberts in a four-game series at Mastodon Field. This is the final home series of the year for IPFW. Senior Daren Boss will be recognized on Sunday prior to first pitch.
