FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After a disappointing loss at Missouri S&T last weekend, St. Francis rebounded in a big way at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium Saturday by pounding Olivet Nazarene, 56-7.
Senior running back Daniel Carter needed just 62 yards to become the all-time leading rusher in St. Francis history accomplishing that in just the first quarter. Carter finished with 120 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
The Cougars started their offensive onslaught when Carter bounced outside for a 36-yard touchdown run less than four minutes into the game. Carter would add a three-yard touchdown run with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Shaine Tierney connected with Armando Bustamante on a 51-yard strike just before the end of the first quarter to give St. Francis a 21-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The only scoring in the second quarter came when Tierney plunged into the end zone on a 4-yard run giving St. Francis a 28-0 advantage at the half.
The Cougars defense had an interception and held Olivet to just 199 yards of total offense.
The big showdown with undefeated, sixth-ranked St. Xavier is now on the horizon next Saturday at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium. Both teams will be fighting for the conference title and a postseason berth when they take the field.
