FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Interview with Coliseum general manager Randy Brown available by clicking play in the video monitor to the left.
Sunday, officials from the Memorial Coliseum gathered at the new Holiday Inn across the street to watch the selection show for the NCAA hockey regional that will invade the Coliseum next weekend. Even though Notre Dame is the host of the event, the Irish didn't qualify for the tournament. Instead, the number one overall seed for the tournament, Miami (OH), will come to the Coliseum along with perennial powerhouse Michigan, Bemidji State and Alabama-Huntsville.
The Redhawks lost in last year's national championship after Boston made an amazing comeback in the third period and overtime to top Miami, 4-3. Michigan will make its 20th consecutive post-season appearance, the longest current streak in the country. The Wolverines 33rd overall tournament appearance is also the most-ever in NCAA hockey.
Bemidji State will be looking to return to the Frozen Four for a second straight season while Alabama-Huntsville enters the tournament as the only team with a losing record.
Midwest regional hockey play starts Saturday when (1)Miami (OH) battles (4)Alabama-Huntsville at 4 p.m. Game two features (2)Bemidji State versus (3)Michigan at approximately 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be Sunday at 8 p.m.
Tickets are still available at the Coliseum box office for those wishing to attend.
