FORT WAYNE - After powering a career-high 21 kills and two digs in IPFW's 3-2 win over #6 Lewis on Feb. 3, senior outside hitter Ivan Matos has been tabbed the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Matos becomes the ninth Mastodon in program history to earn the national weekly award.
Matos' career night helped IPFW beat its first top-10 nationally ranked opponent since the 2007 NCAA Tournament semifinals. The Mastodons beat then-No. 1 Pepperdine in four sets, 3-1.
In 2012, Matos has recorded 115 kills, 38 digs, five assists and four service aces. The Mastodons have won three-straight matches and six of their last seven.
The last time an IPFW player earned player of the week honors was back on Jan. 16, 2007, when C.J. Macias brought home the hardware to Fort Wayne.
IPFW will take on the defending national champion #8 Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Gates Sports Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
