MBB: IU's Ferrell Earns Freshman Honor

The Big Ten this morning announced the men’s basketball Players of the Week. Below are this week’s honorees.

 

Player of the Week

Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota

6-8, Sr., F, St. Paul, Minn./St. Bernard’s

·         Posted two double-doubles, while shooting 73.7 percent from the floor, in a week that saw Minnesota defeat No. 1 Indiana and Penn State

·         Scored a season-high 21 points in the win over the Hoosiers, corralling 12 rebounds with one block and one steal

·         Finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds in his final home game against Penn State, bringing his career double-doubles total to 33

·         Earns his second career Big Ten Player of the Week honor and first this season

·         Last Minnesota Player of the Week: Andre Hollins (Nov. 26, 2012)

 

Co-Freshmen of the Week

Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell, Indiana

6-0, G, Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor

·         Averaged 14.5 points and 5.0 assists in two games this week, helping Indiana clinch at least a share of the Big Ten Championship

·         Posted a career-high 19 points on 62.5 percent shooting in Saturday’s victory over Iowa, also handing out five assists

·         Finished with 10 points on the road against Minnesota, also recording five assists, four rebounds and a steal

·         Earns his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor

·         Last Indiana Big Ten Freshman of the Week: Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell (Nov. 12, 2012)

 

Sam Dekker, Wisconsin

6-7, F, Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran

·         Averaged 14.5 points on 64.3 percent shooting, including 60.0 percent from long range, and 3.5 assists in two games last week

·         Against Nebraska, finished with 19 points on five-of-six shooting, including four three-pointers, four assists and two rebounds

·         Shot 50.0 percent from the floor against Purdue, recording 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and two blocks

·         Wins his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award
