Irish Debut At No. 5 In BCS Standings

Alabama and Florida are at the top of the season's first BCS standings, making another all-SEC top two, with Oregon and Kansas State close behind the Gators.

The Crimson Tide in first was no surprise. Alabama is an overwhelming No. 1 in both polls used in the BCS formula.

Florida in second was less anticipated. The Gators are No. 3 in the polls, but rated best by the computer rankings That gave them a slight edge over Oregon and Kansas State when the numbers were crunched. Florida's BCS average is .9092. Oregon's is .8993 and Kansas State's is .8963.

Notre Dame is fifth and not too far back at .8774.

In other news, Notre Dame's Everett Golson sustained a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter against Stanford but Irish coach Brian Kelly says the starting quarterback should be ready to play against Brigham Young on Saturday.

Kelly says Golson still had some concussion symptoms on Sunday, and will undergo further tests on Monday. Kelly says he expects Golson to be cleared to practice by Tuesday.

Kelly says if Golson is not ready to play, then Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix could both see action against BYU. Rees helped rally the unbeaten Irish to a 20-13 overtime victory against Stanford. It was the third time this season the Irish turned to Rees to finish a game.

Kelly says Rees is good at managing difficult situations.
