Bishop Luers High School fired head football coach Matt Lindsay Sunday.

NewsChannel 15 reached out to Lindsay for comment on Monday.

“I’ve had a wonderful 33 years at Bishop Luers," Lindsay told WANE. "I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to coach and work with a lot of tremendous young people and coaches. I love the school and the people and I wish them all the very best.”

In Sunday's news release, the principal, Mary Keefer, said Lindsay had been placed on administrative leave on Thursday, September 13. His termination is effective September 16.

Keefer clarified that Lindsay was not on medical leave, as some media outlets had reported. She added that the school never said he was on medical leave and that those reports were inaccurate.

The release said Lindsay was terminated because of "violations of school and Diocesan polices and his violations of his employment contract obligations."

No other details about why Lindsay was fired have been released.

Lindsay had been with Bishop Luers for 33 years, and was head football coach for 26 of those. He led the Knights to nine state titles, including the last three years. Lindsay also won a 10th state championship with the program serving as an assistant coach.

Lindsay's career resume also includes coaching such notable names as Anthony Spencer of the Dallas Cowboys, and current senior linebacker Jaylon Smith, one of the highest rated high school players in the nation and a Notre Dame commit.
