BLOOMINGTON, IN. - On a day where no area team finished higher than 10th in the final team standings - relay teams from Carroll and North Side made their mark at the boys state track meet.
The Chargers 4x800 team of Eric Claxton, Alexander Hess, John Hester and Jonathan Harper claimed a state title with a time of 7:41.29 - almost three full seconds ahead of second place Avon. It was the icing on the cake for Hester who earlier in the day had finished sixth in the 800 meters. Carroll's Ryan Cavender also finished eights in the 110-meter hurdles.
North Side meanwhile broke a 41-year-old school record in winning the state title in the 4x400 meter relay. Mohammed Bangura, Tyvon Kelley, Ed Benson and Kersten Barnfield narrowly defeated Lawrence Central with a time of 3:16.95 - just half a second ahead of the field.
In other events, Snider's Mictch Dutton and Adam Williams placed fifth and sixth respectively in the 800 meters. The relay teams from Snider in the 400-meters and 3,200-meters also had top five finishes.
Trevor Wright of Northrop medaled in the discuss - finishing ninth with a throw of 164-8.
