Blackhawk Christian high school basketball standout and Michigan State signee Russell Byrd is recovering from surgery to repair a broken foot he suffered during a workout earlier in the week.

Byrd broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot Wednesday while working out at Spiece Fieldhouse.

"It will take eight weeks to recover from this surgery," Kelly Byrd - Russell's father - said to WANE-TV on Friday night. "The surgery went well and Russell is in good spirits."

Byrd is expected to be full recovered when he reports to Michigan State. However, he will not be able to play in the Indiana-Kentucky all-star series this summer.
