Garrett's Spencer Burns powered his way into Monday's Midwest League Home Run Derby by winning the Hometown Hitter competition Wednesday night at Parkview Field.

Burns, who advanced to Wednesday's finals by winning the ACAC competition, topped Elmhurst's Kristian Gayday and Carroll's Justin Glass. Gayday represented the SAC while Glass represented the NHC.

In the first round both Gayday and Burns hit one home run while Glass didn't manage to clear the fence despite hitting three balls off the wall.

In the second and final round Elmhurst's Gayday would not hit a home run. That set the stage for Burns who crushed the first pitch he saw into the left field seats for a decisive victory.

Burns now joins eight Midwest League All-Stars in Monday's home run derby leading up to the MWL All-Star game. Burns will be able to use an aluminum bat while the MWL stars can only use wood bats.
