The South Adams School Board has announced the hiring of Rick Burkhalter as the new head football coach. Coach Burkhalter replaces Jason Arnold, who was hired to become the athletic director, becoming the tenth head coach in the high school’s history.
Coach Burkhalter has served as a varsity football coach for 12 years. He spent the previous two seasons as a member of the South Adams’ coaching staff, serving as the offensive coordinator. Prior to that, Rick coached from 2000-2010 as a member of the Bellmont coaching staff. Winning the 2008 3A State Championship highlights the success Rick achieved in his time as an assistant coach. Rick spent most of his time at Bellmont as the offensive coordinator, including the championship season. During his last two years at Bellmont, Coach Burkhalter served as their head coach compiling a 12-10 record. Rick also has spent the last 3 years as the Bellmont head softball coach.
Athletic Director, Jason Arnold, on the hiring of Rick Burkhalter:
“South Adams is very excited with the hiring of Coach Burkhalter. I have gotten to know Coach Burkhalter very well during my time with the Starfires, going back to his time as Bellmont’s head coach. Coach has impressed me not only with his football knowledge but as a person. He was very helpful to me in our transition to an option offense, and he has done a tremendous job of developing relationships with our coaching staff and players. This hire allows South Adams to build upon the foundation we have started the past five years, provides continuity for the staff, and allows our young players to continue to develop and grow in our system.”
Coach Burkhalter’s comments:
“I have been privileged to be a part of the South Adams coaching staff under Coach Arnold for the last two years, and I am extremely excited to continue working with the players and coaching staff. My hope is to establish positive relationships, good work ethics, and a sense of team. Since I have been a part of South Adams football, I have been very impressed with the help and support from administration, parents and community. In my past experience, I have found that this combination can create a winning atmosphere.” (courtesy of the Berne Tri-Weekly)
