ANGOLA, Ind. (WANE) - A car slammed into a couple’s Angola apartment early Sunday morning and made it all the way into the kitchen.
It happened around 3:30 a.m. at Top of the Hill Apartments Sunday. Lalenya McLaughlin said she and her boyfriend were about to make chicken wings when they saw headlights. It was her boyfriend's cousin, who she said had been drinking with them earlier that night.
“He was extremely intoxicated. I told him to stay and not leave and just sleep it off and he refused to. He just left,” McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said when the car rammed through the side of her apartment, it knocked her over along with her boyfriend. She has cuts to her foot, some bruises, and is sore, but said she feels lucky to be alive.
“I fell over, and he [her boyfriend] fell over through debris because the table and the couch came all through this way,” McLaughlin said. “If we weren't standing where we were standing in that kitchen we would've been gone. So it was a blessing from God that we're even here right now.”
Crews worked to rebuild the side of the apartment Monday afternoon. Leaders with the complex said there’s about $5,000 to $6,000 in damage.
Daniel Damron was arrested in the incident. He has been charged with OWI and criminal recklessness. Police say Damron refused a blood alcohol test.
The couple living in the apartment has insurance. They are currently staying in a hotel.
