WATERLOO, Ind. (WANE) - As you can imagine, other officers in Waterloo are shaken up about the shooting of their colleague.

Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady's wife is also a police officer in Waterloo. He has been on the force for 14 years and one of this co-workers says they're lucky to have him.

"He's one of our more dedicated officers if not the most dedicated," Waterloo P.D. Reserve Sergeant Don Ladd said.

You can ask anyone around Waterloo. Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady's one of the best officers in town.

"There's so many little things that go on all of the time that are behind the scenes and that's where Steve is. He's always helpful for the community. He's out there and among them. A lot of times you don't even know he's around."

Steve's wife, Jan is a Sergeant with the Waterloo Police Department. Reserve Sergeant Don Ladd said the two do great things for the community.

"They work well together as a team. They get a lot of things done here because they can work together."

Julie Havner has lived in Waterloo for 15 years. She said Jan helped her when she had a mini stroke.

"She couldn't have been better or more competent. She was like family. It was a great comfort," Havner said.

Havner says the best thing about Jan is she can work with almost anyone.

"She has been good in my experience with kids, old people, people that are not really likeable. She always seemed to be patient. I never saw her lose her temper and I've never heard anything but good about her husband."

Once Steve recovers, Ladd says he can see Brady eager to return back to doing what he loves.

"Steve's very pragmatic and he's stoic. I see him coming around from this going back to work and doing his job," Ladd said.

Brady's still in critical condition but stable.
