FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Area fishermen and fishing businesses fear President Obama is considering a ban on recreational fishing.
President Obama's Ocean Policy Taskforce recently released recommendations on how to improve the health of oceans, coasts, and lakes. According to some - including lawmakers like Congressman Mark Souder - those recommendations leave the door wide open to a ban on recreation fishing. All of that put together has created a lot of fear and outrage in the fishing industry.
When I first heard it, I said, 'man, this can't be real," said Mike Reuille, owner of the Northside Bait & Tackle shop on Sherman Ave. "I think if they come in here and try to take the fishing out, you're going to have a riot!"
Anthony Truelove is in the same boat. He runs the Lafayette Bait and Tackle shop. Truelove says business has slowed down since 2000, because of the economy, and a ban would undoubtedly sink his and other jobs.
"I don't think it could get much harder," said Truelove. "But if that would happen to any extent, I would quickly find something else to do."
Truelove believes there is a problem with over fishing. But he doesn't think a ban is the answer. Both Truelove and Reuille believe catch and release could help maintain a healthy fish population. Truelove even thinks cutting down fishing times may work.
It's still unclear what will happen, but those who love and work in the fishing world are hoping the President will listen to their fears.
"I just can't seem them letting it happen," said Reuille.
The administration won't take any more public input on the matter. Souder is not happy with that, and plans on sending the President a letter asking him to reconsider.
