HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) - The annual Turkey Trot 5K race in Huntington brought out record numbers Thursday. The 2009 race had 344 participants. Last year's race saw 225 runners and walkers, a sign the event is picking up steam.
The Turkey Trot is in its fifth year. Money raised from participants entry fees goes to the Pathfinder Kids Scholarship Fund. McDonald's is a sponsor of the event, and appropriately, Ronald McDonald showed up for the race.
The early morning hours saw temperatures in the mid-thirties, making it a cold morning for runners.
A husband and wife team won the men and women overall races, respectively. Nicholas and Lauren Johnson were the winners. Nicholas crossed the finish line in 15 minutes and 40 seconds. His wife, Lauren, finished the race in 18 minutes and 50 seconds. This is the third year in a row Nicholas Johnson has won the Turkey Trot 5K.
