FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)--Leaders with the Fort Wayne Fire Department said an apartment fire at Hickory Mills Apartments may have started after a tenant left something on the stove.

Fire crews responded to the southeast Fort Wayne apartment complex just after noon on Thursday.  Heavy smoke was billowing out of the attic.  Firefighters had the it under control in 16 minutes.

Two tenants lived in the affected apartment.

“Nobody in that particular apartment was home during the fire,” said Todd Korn with the Fort Wayne Fire Department.  “There were other people in other apartments but they were evacuated and there were no injuries.”

The extent of the damage to the apartment is unknown.  Surrounding apartments had minor smoke damage.  Tenants living nearby are expected to be able to return.
