NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (WANE) - A deer hunter was shot Saturday afternoon while in a tree stand near North Webster.

Indiana Conservation officers said around 3:30 p.m. three juveniles from the Warsaw area were squirrel hunting on the DNR Tri-County Fish & Wildlife property.

A sixteen-year-old hunter told officers that he fired two shots from his .22 rifle at what he thought was the flicker of a squirrel’s tail.

Trenton Wogoman, 33 of Napanee, was hit by one of the shots in the lower abdomen. He was hunting deer from an elevated deer stand.

The officers said the sixteen-year-old realized that what he saw was not a squirrel when Wogoman shouted, “You shot me.”

The squirrel hunters helped Wogoman get out of his tree stand, called 911, and helped him to a nearby road for assistance.

North Webster EMS took Wogoman to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Samaritan helicopter then flew him to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where he is in fair condition.
