ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - Counties in the southern portion of NewsChannel 15's viewing area were hit hard by the storm, and now people are out cleaning up after the winter blast.
Adams County, Indiana received several inches of snow and a little bit of ice on top of it. The emergency management director said it was actually a good thing the ice covered the snow.
"It put crust on the snow and even though we had a lot of drifting it was somewhat limited and our snowfall amount was kept down because of that," said John August, Adams County EMA Director.
Neighborhood streets were completely covered in several inches of snow. The county roads were layered with blowing and drifting snow as well as a layer of slick ice.
"We need to keep the people off the county roads so that we can plow instead of pulling people out of the middle of a road or a ditch," said August.
A long stretch of 224 from Indiana to Ohio was covered in blowing and drifting snow. It was much of the same in Van Wert County, Ohio. There were a few stranded motorists but the emergency management director said most people stayed off the roads.
"The roads continue to blow shut, the plows just can't keep up with it, so we're again telling people to stay home we closed the government buildings today," said Rick McCoy, Van Wert County EMA Director.
Adams County has scaled back it's emergency level to Code Red, which means drivers should use extreme caution when traveling. Van Wert County lifted its emergency warning, but they still want people to drive safely if they have to leave the house.
