FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) He was charged with committing murder when he was 12 years old. On Monday, Jamone Williams was released after serving almost 14 years for killing Prince Chapman.
Chapman was 64 years old when he was found shot near his automotive shop in 1998. He was a community leader; he coached Metro football for 12 years, turned his home into a community center, was a Deacon at his church and he worked as a mechanic for Navistar for 30 years.
The coroner's report stated that Chapman had been shot three times, twice in the head and once in the leg.
Police were initially baffled as to what the motive for killing Chapman would be. The investigation eventually led to then 12-year-old Williams.
Williams pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in September 2000. He received dropped murder charges in exchange for the guilty plea. He was charged as an adult.
He was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison, five years of house arrest following prison and then 10 years of probation. Fifteen years of his sentence was suspended and he had the remaining sentence shortened because of good behavior.
Rosa Chapman, the widow of Prince, said she hopes Williams reaches out to a church and find some much needed help. She said he hopes he takes advantage of this second life given to him.
"I pray he takes advantage of the opportunity that's been given to him, to make a change," she said.
Rosa said the night of her husband's death was a nightmare to her family and the community.
Williams spent most of his time at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. He's serving probation.
Before the shooting, Williams had been sentenced to a 13 month term at the Indiana Boys School in Plainfield for armed robbery and three lesser charges.
