FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Former senator Evan Bayh visited Fort Wayne on Thursday along with Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Joe Donnelly.

Donnelly is running against Republican Richard Mourdock for Richard Lugar's old seat in the Senate.

The two made an appearance at Paint the Town Graphics, a small, women-owned business on Main Street.

Bayh and Donnelly said leaders in Washington could learn from small businesses.

"Working together and solving problems practically you don't ask who's democrat and conservative you ask what's the job how do we get it done and we don't' have that attitude in congress anymore," said Bayh.

Donnelly also expressed his desire and willingness to work with others, saying, "We don't expect a 'my way or the highway attitude.' We expect getting things done."

Donnelly and Bayh went on to have lunch with community leaders at the locally-owned Opie’s Diner in Plymouth. From there, they visited Safety-Kleen Refinery in East Chicago.

On Wednesday, the two visited with workers at Monarch Beverage in Indianapolis, ate with community members at Charlie Brown’s Pancake and Steakhouse on Main Street in Speedway, and visited with workers and management at Baesler’s Market in Terre Haute.

While Bayh is out campaigning with Donnelly, Senator Dan Coats is supporting Mourdock. Coats said he wants to be Mourdock's partner in the Senate.

Coats added the outcome of the Senate race may lie with the race for the White House.

"Nationally the race for president will dictate how these races below the presidency will turn out," Coats said.
