LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- - A Republican lawmaker who is running for Michigan governor says
the state should continue talks with the federal government about
housing Guantanamo Bay detainees.
State Sen. Tom George of Kalamazoo said Tuesday there is
precedent for Michigan holding federal detainees. The state had
more than a dozen prisoner-of-war camps during World War II.
George's comments contrast with the position taken by another
GOP gubernatorial candidate, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Holland.
Hoekstra has said transferring suspected terrorists to Michigan is
"ill-conceived."
Hoekstra is expected to testify about the issue later Tuesday
before a state legislative committee.
A soon-to-closed state prison in Standish is a possible
location for the federal detainees.
