New details in Austin Hatch recovery

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The family of Austin Hatch has posted a new journal entry giving more specific highlights of his recovery.

Austin was the lone survivor of a June plane crash in Michigan that killed his father and stepmother.

The new entry reads:

"Austin is well underway with his a-maize-ing comeback. Although his recovery will be long and difficult, his progress causes us to rejoice and hope. A few highlights from the past week are:

-So far Austin prefers chili rather than hamburger or ravioli

-Austin sang 'Hail to the Victors' with us

-Austin is working hard on his mobility skills

'Team Austin' includes a wonderful group of therapists who push him hard and all of us celebrate his success. Austin and his family are especially mindful of all his classmates and the entire Canterbury family as they returned to school today."

Austin, 16, and his father survived a similar crash in 2003 in Indiana that killed his mother and two siblings. Dr. Hatch was the pilot both times.

Austin, a Canterbury High School star athlete, had been recruited to play basketball at the University of Michigan, which adds context to the mention of one of the university's colors and its fight song in the most recent journal entry.
