PAULDING, OHIO (WANE) – The massive fire that destroyed a downtown Paulding building was ruled as an arson Monday by the Paulding Fire Department (PFD).

According to PFD, crews were called to the Old Barnes Hotel at 110 S. Williams Street just before 2 p.m. Sunday to find the first story fully involved.

Crews were on scene for about nine hours until about 11:00 p.m. and managed to keep the fire contained to the hotel.

A total of eight fire departments from surrounding areas and ten other agencies assisted the Paulding Fire Department at the scene.

PFD said the hotel is a 100% loss and no injuries were reported.

One witness, Jim Bowers, told NewsChannel 15 the building is over 100 years old, has been vacant for over three years and is involved in a legal battle to have it torn down or made safe.

The Paulding Fire Department is being assisted by the Paulding Police Department and the State Fire Marshall’s Office in the investigation.
