INDIANAPOLIS, (WANE) At the request of Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, residents in Indiana and other states paused for a moment of reflection Friday morning at 9:30 to remember the victims of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Malloy has issued a proclamation declaring Friday as a Day of Mourning in Connecticut. He also sent letters to all other governors inviting them to ask their citizens to participate by taking a moment to honor the Sandy Hook children and educators.

The observances come one week after shootings when 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza opened fire on classrooms in one of the nation's deadliest mass shootings. Lanza also shot his mother dead at their home and killed himself.

In Fort Wayne, the bells were rung at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and at many other churches.  Schools also took part in the moment of reflection.
