FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - High school guidance counselors heard about the top 50 jobs in Indiana Friday morning at an ITT Technical Institute breakfast.

In the top 50 hot jobs in Indiana released by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), the top three require information technology skills, 16 jobs on the list are in the life sciences or medical field and 11 are related to education.

"Many of those careers we offer associate or bachelor degrees in that area," Fort Wayne ITT Tech Director of Marketing Sandra Cockrell said.

While people are finding themselves unemployed in the current economic climate, many of them are going back to school to make themselves more marketable. That is changing the face of the ITT Tech classroom.

"It's more mature adults, 24 and older, who are looking to retool or find a new career," Cockrell said.

ITT Tech in Fort Wayne just added a nursing program last December to help students get into an industry expected to grow. Nurses are at toward the top of the hot jobs lists from WorkOne and DWD.

"I think we have to think about preparing people differently and being lifelong learners," Kay Anthony, Graduate Retention Program Manager at the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce said.

Anthony said several industries will have significant growth over the next few years:

* Information Systems and Technology

* Life Sciences/Medical

* Biomedical Engineering

* Transportation and Logistics

* Finance

* Business

* Insurance

"[These top 50 jobs lists] tell us there are people who are optimistic about Indiana and optimistic for a reason because they've identified things on the horizon people can make a living at," Anthony said.
