PIERCETON, Ind. (WANE) - A Pierceton woman may lose her arm after she was attacked by a pit bull.

The attack happened Tuesday, when Janet Hartman, 63, was looking for her son at his friend's house in Pierceton. That's in Kosciusko County.

Hartman got out of her van and a pit bull, owned by her son's friend, ran from the porch and locked on to her arm.

An off-duty Warsaw police officer who lived nearby was able to respond and fend off the dog.

Hartman was airlifted to Parkview Hospital, where she remains in serious condition.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson Chad Hill says the dog was not put down after the attack. Hill says the owners of the dog produced the proper paperwork to prove the dog was legal, and had all its shots.

The dog and its owners did not break the leash law, according to Hill, because it was on its owners property. Hill said police have no reason to remove the dog from the home, or to mandate its fate.
