FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Northeastern Indiana carpenters are heading back to work after a nearly month long strike. Carpenters Union Local 232 reached a tentative agreement with area contracters this week.

Workers went on strike in June, when their contract expired on May 31st. Dozens of carpenters put down their tools and picked up the picket signs. The Building Contractors Association along with the Labor Relations Council worked to hammer out a deal, but conflicts over benefits and training stalled the process.

The strike slowed construction at Eel River Elementary. Northwest Allen County School officials modified their plans in response and believe the school will open on the first day of classes.

The strike did not slow work at Carroll High School, which is expanding. "Different contractors have been working together to get things completed for school," said Assistant Principal Park Grinder. "We are glad to have them come back. There is plent of work to be done. And it's time to get it done."

Workers had the option to return to work Wednesday or Thursday. Several carpenters were at Carroll High on Wednesday.
