FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The shootings at Fort Hood military base have horrified a lot of people, including local veterans, and service members.
At American Legion Post 82 on Friday, televisions were turned to national coverage of the tragic events, and it was certainly a top of discussion.
"To have that done on a military base from one of your own is just atrocious," said Mike Scheele, the chaplain for the post.
"There's no explaining what happened," said World War II veteran Chuck Halter. "There's no answer to it."
Meanwhile, at the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne , the base paused for a moment of silence exactly 24 hours after the shootings took place. The Department of Defense sent word to bases across the country that the observance would certainly be in order.
At exactly 2:34pm local time, all 200 or so members working on the base paused to reflect on the massacre at Fort Hood.
"I was praying for the families of those that were killed and the co-workers of all those people," said Master Sergeant Nancy Buck.
Chief Master Sergeant Tim Tolentino said his thoughts were also focused on the families affected by the shootings, and not on the man responsible.
"My heart goes out to the members and the families at Fort Hood," said Tolentino. "It's a very tragic event and it's very saddening."
