FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Several state legislators met with the Allen County Right to Life today to get an update on pro-legislation bill.

The bill requires doctors who perform an abortion to have admitting privileges with a nearby hospital.

Many Indiana doctors who perform these procedures aren't based near the abortion clinics. That makes it's very unlikely they have any authority to admit their patients to an nearby hospital. Opposers of the bill say it's adding a new obstacle for women to get safe and legal abortions. Supporters disagree.

"We think that's an important patient safety issue," says Rep. Matt Bell. "So that anyone who's having an invasive procedure can be referred to a hospital should something go wrong."

The state's Republican dominated senate passed the bill earlier this month. It goes to a Democrat controlled house later this week, where similar legislation has failed in the past.

Two Indiana counties have already passed similar ordinances. Allen County is still considering a similar measure but holding off on a vote.
County commissioners may broaden a proposed ordinance.
