Two pilots managed to safely land a single engine plane Monday morning after one side of the propeller sheared off.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the plane had taken off from an airport in Howe, Indiana.  Chad L. Miller of Topeka was piloting the plane and had planned on practicing landing procedures with flight instructor William T. Reid of Howe.

At 11:43 a.m., police received a call regarding a plane that had made an emergency landing in a bean field in the area of County Road 150 East and the Elkhart/Kosciusko County line.

The two men told police that the 1978 Grumman Tiger was flying at about 3500 feet when one side of the prop sheared off.  They said the prop had been inspected before takeoff and showed no signs of stress.

Officials with the FAA were contacted to investigate the cause of the prop failure.  Aside from the prop, the plane received minimal damage.
