WABASH, Ind. (WANE) - A Wabash, Indiana man is accused of shooting deer in rural parts of Wabash and Whitley Counties in what Indiana Conservation Officer Jerry Hoerdt called a "disturbing case of thrill killing".
Grant R. Kelley, 25, or Wabash was arrested Tuesday and charged with 17 misdemeanor wildlife and firearms counts following a six month investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.
In April, Conservation Officer Hoerdt was given information by someone who alleged that Kelley was illegally killing deer in Wabash and Whitley Counties.
According to a probably cause affidavit submitted to both Wabash and Whitley County Superior Courts, authorities believe that between late October of 2008 and April 20 of this year, Kelley would drive through rural parts of the two counties after leaving work. If Kelley spotted a deer, he would shoot it and leave the animal dead or dying. It's alleged Kelley made no attempt to harvest the meat.
The affidavit alleges Kelley shot the deer at various times ranging from noon through early evening. At least one killing took place at 1:00 a.m.
Authorities believe Kelley used a variety of rifles including a 30.06 and an AK 47.
"In my 17 years as an Indiana Conservation Officer, I have never been involved in an investigation such as this," said Officer Hoerdt.
The DNR encourages people who hear gunshots in the middle of the night or see things that might lead them to believe illegal activities are taking place to call the Turn in a Poacher hotline at 1-800-TIP-IDNR.
If convicted, Kelley could be fined and may face jail time.
