DECATUR, Ind. (WANE) - Police busted a suspected drug dealer after he made a run for the border. On Tuesday morning, Jermaine Cooper, 36, led police on a high speed chase. It started near the intersection of McKinnie and Hessen Cassel in Fort Wayne.
Michael Joyner with the Fort Wayne Police Department said speeds reached 50 mph within the city limits. Cooper eventually made his way to the highway, and speeds increased to an excess of 90 mph.
Cooper ended up in Decatur, stopping the chase in the Taco Bell parking lot off U.S. 27. It turns out, a burrito is to thank for ending the dangerous situation. The suspect told police he "knew he was going to jail for a while" and wanted one last burrito.
"I guess he's trying to make light of a very serious situation," said Joyner.
Cooper was apparently thinking outside the bun when he told police of his pre-jail time meal plans.
"He realizes [how serious this is] based upon that comment that he made to officers. He's in some deep water," said Joyner.
People working at neighboring businesses said the chase added some spice to an average day.
"It made us think," said Steve Ritter, co-owner for a neighboring bargain store. "He could have turned a couple seconds earlier and been right here at our store."
Despite how it happened, police said a wanted man is now behind bars. Cooper faces several charges relating to this chase and dealing drugs.
"I can just say that it's good detective work, specifically from our vice narcotics units. We clearly have taken a bite out of crime," said Joyner.
