COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WANE) - The Department of Natural Resources has released the name of the 41-year-old Columbia City man that died Sunday night after he fell out of the canoe he was hunting from. Officers say he is Jay E. Bohde. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Bohde had been waterfowl hunting near the southeast end of Goose Lake with two other companions in a nineteen foot canoe when all three hunters fell into the water.
They swam approximately 30 to 40 yards to the nearest shore when the victim began to have difficulty in swimming within a few feet of shore and passed out. He was pulled back into a boat while 911 was called. Emergency personnel met the hunters at the Public Access Site and took the victim to Parkview Whitley Hospital where he later died.
