It started out as a quiet Monday for the Leffler family in rural Huntington County, Indiana. Lisa Leffler and her two kids were watching a movie that afternoon in their Andrews home along County Road 600 West. Suddenly, they heard a loud bang.

"I looked out my patio windows and saw a car in the air flipping and it landed upside down and I saw the smoke and jumped up and called 911,” Lisa Leffler said.

A van was sitting upside down in a soybean field just a few feet from the Leffler’s home. Leffler’s two kids, Zac and Alisha, ran out to the scene of the crash while Lisa called 911.

"I just did what I had to do; I mean I wasn't thinking at all. I just knew that I had to get her out and get her safe" Zac said.

He ran to the van and pulled out the driver, 22-year-old Samantha Shively of Huntington. She was one of four people in the van. Shively suffered trauma to her arms and legs, according to police. She was airlifted to the hospital.

A passenger, 19 year-old Colt Carroll from Huntington was also airlifted to the hospital in unknown condition.

Two kids were also in the van. Gabriel Crago, 3 years-old, may have suffered the most. He was ejected nearly 50 feet from the van and suffered trauma to his head, face, and feet.

Two-month-old Camden Shively suffered a bruise to the head. He was trapped inside his car seat. A passerby, Jim Miller, pulled over to assist the Lefflers in rescuing the family. Witnesses say Miller unbuckled the infant, pulling him to safety just minutes before the van erupted in flames.

"I couldn't believe they survived. It was crazy,” Zac said.

Samantha Shively told police she swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the road. The investigation continues.
