FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The 2012 Vera Bradley Classic Golf & Tennis Tournament raised $1,001,145, officials from the company said Monday.

The four-day event is held in Fort Wayne and is billed as the largest women’s amateur golf and tennis charity event in the nation.

This year's event included nearly 600 participants and 300 volunteers from 11 states, according to Vera Bradley.

The funds support breast cancer research at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis. This year's amount brings the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer’s total giving to nearly $16 million.

This year's total raised outpaced that of last year, when the event raised $945,185.

Vera Bradley officials also told NewsChannel 15 that the company will begin hosting a second Vera Bradley Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina in October.
