VA reviewing medical center care halt

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- A top official in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is reviewing the agency's decision to shut down inpatient care at its Fort Wayne medical center.

The department's inspector general wrote to U.S. Reps. Joe Donnelly and Marlin Stutzman this week that VA officials had started the review and would provide the results when it is finished.

The Journal Gazette reports that when Donnelly and Stutzman asked for the review this month, the medical center announced plans to resume inpatient care in the first three months of 2013 if it could meet quality of care standards.

Donnelly and Stutzman told VA officials they were concerned that the agency hadn't identified the steps needed to center's intensive and acute care units, which have about 30 beds between them.
