FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Two stores in Fort Wayne serving U.S. Cellular customers will close their doors in May.

In November, U.S. Cellular announced it was selling a portion of its customer base to Sprint Nextel for $480 million. Because of the transaction, U.S. Cellular is closing several retail stores across the Midwest, including Indiana.

The Fort Wayne stores at Glenbrook Mall and Northcrest Shopping Center will begin closing May 17, according to a WARN notice sent to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The closures are expected to take about two weeks to finalize.

Nine employees will lose their jobs, seven at the Northcrest store and two at the Glenbrook store, according to the notice.

In total, 96 retail stores will close and approximately 1,000 jobs will be lost.

The transaction between Sprint and U.S. Cellular still needs regulatory approval and is expected to close by mid-2013.
