FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - United Way of Allen County will hold its 20th annual "United Way Day of Caring" event Thursday.

Approximately 1,100 volunteers from over 60 local businesses and organizations will work throughout Fort Wayne.

Volunteers will work at more than 70 projects throughout the city doing a variety of jobs. Painting, cleaning and landscaping are the primary jobs for the day, with additional work at different sites.

Some of the projects will take place at non-profit agencies, child care centers, after-school youth program sites, and schools. Some private residences will also get attention; those areas coordinated by NeighborLink .

The theme for the 2012 event is LIVE UNITED; everyone working together to build a better community.

"Day of Caring really represents what United Way is all about," said Todd Stephenson, President and CEO of United Way Allen County , in a press release.

"Day of Caring is an annual event where people step outside of the office and into the community to make it a better place for everyone, particularly individuals in need."

The day will start with a breakfast at Headwaters Park. From there, volunteers will be dispatched to various projects around Fort Wayne.

United Way, under it's current name since 1972, has roots to Fort Wayne since 1922.
