ANDREWS, Ind. (WANE) - Two dogs have completely recovered after swimming in Salamonie Reservoir with high levels of blue-green algae.
On July 15, Marge and Larry Young were playing fetch with their four dogs in the Salamonie Reservoir in Huntington County. Two of the dogs died within 24 hours of swimming in the reservoir.
“Within two hours one of them was deathly ill and was dead within 12 or 14 hours,” Larry Young said. “The second died within 24 hours.”
The other two dogs are now fully recovered.
Back in July, toxic algae was a huge problem for lakes and ponds in Indiana. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management discovered high levels of the blue-green algae in five different lakes across Indiana.
The Youngs said there were no warning signs posted at the Salamonie Reservoir where their dogs were swimming.
