FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Staff and visitors to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo celebrated an important milestone Sunday, as Norbert the Aldabra giant tortoise celebrated his 50th birthday.
The Zoo commemorated the occasion with a party for Norbert, including a birthday card signed by visitors, and a birthday cake made of sweet potatoes, one of Norbert's favorite treats.
"(We wanted) to celebrate and let people know who Norbert is, and just help them get involved in the zoo and share a love of the animals," said Zookeeper Racheal Branning.
Norbert has lived at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo since the early 90s, and is one of the zoo's oldest residents, topped only by his partner Purdue, who is in her mid 60s.
However despite being middle-aged by human standards, Norbert is still fairly young for a tortoise. The oldest living Aldabra giant tortoise is 178 years old.
The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo closes for the season October 14.
