FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - More than a hundred students from across the state were in Fort Wayne Saturday to play some chess.
Canterbury hosted the state chess tournament for grades K through 12. The students compete in different grade levels.
Canterbury's hosted the tournament for the last 11 years. Organizers said playing chess can help students in many ways.
"It helps a lot with cognitive skills and just learning to concentrate. They've also found in some studies that some students' math skills and even other things have benefited as a result of starting chess," Jim Dean, the Canterbury chess instructor, said.
The winners in each grade level got trophies and savings bonds.
