OSSIAN, Ind. (WANE) - More than 500 students at Ossian Elementary School had to be evacuated to the gym Friday after a student brought a grenade to school.
According to Superintendent Dr. Scott Mills, the school was holding a special presentation about war heroes and encouraged students to dress up for the event.
A fourth grader, dressed up in army fatigues, brought in a grenade that his father had been using as a paper weight to show his friends.
Students were evacuated as a precaution and Ossian Police determined that the inside of the grenade had been drilled out and there was no danger.
Investigators said the student knew the grenade wasn't live and wasn’t dangerous.
The incident remains under investigation by the Ossian Police Department and Northern Wells Community Schools.
