DEKALB, Co. - A group of Pennsylvania State University runners hopes to set a new world record.
Ten runners will take on a 1000 mile run from Minneapolis to State College, Pa. Their route led them right along Dekalb County Road, 68 Wednesday night around their 600 mile mark.
"It's going well, we are under pace, which is good, so we're actually ahead of schedule, so we have a little bit of flexibility," said Teddy Quinn, a runner and 2009 Penn State grad. "It's been relatively flat so far, and we've been getting a lot of cool support along the way. I guess, they're searching on the internet when they see our car, finding out about the foundation...you see the comments on the website, like 'you guys are great, this is awesome, inspiring,' a couple people have joined us, people running, cycling."
They are running for a scholarship called "Life...Back on Track" which honors Kevin Dare, a Penn State pole vaulter who died during competition at the 2002 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
"The foundation was founded to raise awareness about pole vault safety and to keep Kevin's spirit and legacy alive," Quinn said.
Even though they got turned around about 30 mile east of Fort Wayne, they are on schedule to break the current record of 99 hours, three minutes, and 27 seconds.
The team left Monday afternoon and are expected to be in State College around 2 p.m. Friday.
