FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The recent mild temperatures have been good for many things, such as clearing the snow and ice. However, there is a small down side to the record temps. Potholes are beginning to pop up across the area.
Potholes form quite easily in our area. First, cracks will form on the road and water will get underneath that main layer. When the temperatures drop below freezing, the water freezes and expands. This causes more damage to that area. Then, the ice melts, cars drive over the damaged surface, and a pothole is formed.
The good news for us, the city, county, and state crews are already out finding and repairing potholes. We drove around Fort Wayne on Friday and only found a few small potholes, and a bunch of patched ones.
The crews can't find all of them though. If you spot a pothole, you can report it to the appropriate road crew. If you're in a city, you should contact your city street department. For Fort Wayne you can call 311 or 427-8311. If you're in a rural area you should contact your county street department. For Allen County you can call 449-7369. All state road and highway reports should go to INDOT Fort Wayne (866-227-3555) or the Ohio DOT (614-466-7170).
