NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) - Police in New Haven are investigating a fatal train accident involving a pedestrian late Wednesday night.

Around 11:50 p.m., police responded to the railroad tracks in the 500 block of Broadway in downtown New Haven involving a pedestrian being struck by a moving train.

According to New Haven police, Clark Wilbur Fagen Jr., 55, of New Haven, was walking south on Broadway when he struck the side of a car on the train. Police said the man was not struck by the engine.

Investigators said the Fagen killed instantly. His death has been ruled accidential by the Allen County Coroner's Office.

Police said a witness with a train company who shuttles train engineers from place-to-place told them he saw the man walking and step into the train. The train continued on, possibly not knowing anything happened. It was not clear if investigators would have to call the train back to the area for the investigation.

Officer Darren Peterson, spokesperson for the New Haven Police Department, told NewsChannel 15 they believed Fagen was intoxicated and are trying to determine where he was walking from and where he might have been going.

The New Haven Police Department and the Fort Wayne Allen County Crash Team (F.A.C.T.) are investigating the incident.

Broadway was closed downtown for several hours while crews investigated.
