Warsaw police and the Kosciusko County Coroner have completed the initial investigation into the death of toddler who was pronounced dead at a hospital after being found unresponsive at the home of his babysitter.

WSBT-TV in South Bend is reporting that the parents of the boy told police that 18-month-old Payton Brettell  may have gotten out of his crib after taking a nap and climbed into a car seat and somehow strangled himself.

The preliminary autopsy result shows Brettell died from positional asphyxia and police believe the death was accidental and no foul play was involved.

Police first became aware of a problem when dispatchers received a 911 call at 1:39 pm on Monday regarding the boy.

When police and medics arrived, Brettell was found to be unresponsive.  He was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 pm.

The case remains under investigation by the Warsaw Police Department, the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, and Child Protective Services.
