FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - When temperatures reach triple digits, it's almost unbearable to be outside. Some people who have to work out there have shared their tips on how to beat the heat.

Becky Riley has been a USPS mail carrier for 27 years. She said there's no escaping the heat. Riley said each carrier has his or her own tricks of the trade. One way she stays cool is by rubbing ice cubes on pulse points like her wrists, behind her knees, and her neck. She also makes sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Riley also tries to keep a steady pace on her route.

"Take it steady and slow but keep a good pace. When you start to slow down and it's hard to get going again," USPS mail carrier Becky Riley said.

We also caught up with an INDOT worker. He said when it's warm out, they don't do strenuous work. They also keep an eye out for one another to make sure they don't overheat. INDOT encourages its employees to take frequent water breaks to stay hydrated.

Their tips for you

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water
  • Take breaks while you're outside
  • Apply ice cubes to your pulse points to stay cool
  • Don't do strenuous work outside
