DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – After a DeKalb County deputy crashed into a ditch near State Road 8, three Good Samaritans were able to pull him out of his cruiser just before it caught fire Friday night.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, just before 8 p.m., Deputy Brady Thomas was headed towards the State Road 8 and County Road 59 intersection on his way to assist Butler officers with a residential alarm, when he lost control of his cruiser.

Police said Deputy Thomas was not able to slow down enough to negotiate the left hand turn and skidded across the intersection.

Deputy Thomas’ vehicle then went into a ditch and crashed into a large culvert.

Three people in the area: Storm Evans, Codi Mumma and Deeanda Holtzberg, saw Deputy Thomas’ vehicle in the ditch, stepped in and helped get the officer out.

Police said after the three helped Thomas, the cruiser caught fire.

Deputy Thomas suffered a broken ankle and bruising to the ribs as a result of the crash.
