FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - One person was hurt after heavy smoke and fire filled a house on Lincoln Avenue early Monday morning.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called to a reported house fire in the 1000 block of Lincoln Avenue around 12:15 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from one apartment in the house.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming from various points of the duplex structure as several firefighters attempted to search for additional fire in the house.

Fire officials said one person was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

FWFD Assistant Chief Michael Miller did not know what injuries the victim sustained. He said investigators were still trying to determine what caused the fire.

A fire department report said two other people were able to evacuate safely. Three pets were also rescued by the occupants. They were uninjured.

The duplex is split into four apartments, according to department information.

Firefighters were able to contain damage to one apartment, but some fire did spread to the attic.

The apartment sustained heavy smoke, fire, and water damage, according to the report.

No other injuries were reported.
