FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After a couple months of waiting, organizers behind the bid for a national curling competition found out Fort Wayne will be the host city.
The U.S. Curling Association received bids back in August for their new United States Arena Club Curling National Championship. Bigger cities, such as Milwaukee, Oklahoma City and Minneapolis also placed their bids for the competition.
Fort Wayne Curling Club, Lutheran Health Sportcenter and Visit Fort Wayne worked on putting together a competitive bid to beat out the bigger cities that were in the running.
"The news came in last week that we were awarded it and now we're all set to move forward with planning stages of the event," said Corey Ford, with Visit Fort Wayne.
Organizer met Tuesday to discuss the final details of the event such as a specific date, economic impact, preparing for the event, etc.
Event planners said winning this bid is mostly credited to the Fort Wayne Curling Club hosting other curling competitions for the last three years.
"The recommendations that we got from people that have been at our events before are what really put us over the edge," said Craig Fischer, president of the Fort Wayne Curling Club.
This event plans to bring between $75,000 to $100,000 in economic impact, said Ford.
The national competition will take place in mid-July.
